Posted by MegaHobby.com on Nov 16th 2016
As in any year, model cars again proved to be one of the most popular categories in the hobby industry. This year was extra special, as we saw a large quantity of fantastic new kits introduced (or re-introduced) to the market. Below we list out Top 7 Model Cars of 2016 (by number sold). Click on the titles to see each car's product page. Which ones do you have?
1/25 1983 Hurst Oldsmobile (Revell-Monogram, RMX4317)
The fifth and last generation of Hurst Oldsmobiles were offered in 1983 and 1984. Built on the rear-wheel drive body of the Cutlass, only 3,001 cars were produced in 1983, making this car a rare, but valuable find. Likewise, Revell’s newly-tooled Oldsmobile was a valuable find for any modeler, as our top-selling car of 2016. With 170 parts, including a detailed V-8 engine, this kit continued to blow out the door all year.
1/25 1965 Plymouth “Melrose Missile” Hemi Super Stock Drag Car (Model King, MOE1229)
This Model King production, based off the tooling from Moebius’ 1965 Plymouth, was another top-seller this year, despite its limited production and availability. The kit includes a 496 Super Stock Hemi Engine, hood scoop, rear seat delete panel, full side windows, alloy wheels, drag slicks and steel wheels. One of the most popular model cars of 2016, this one won’t soon be forgotten.
1/25 Ford Bronco (Revell-Monogram, RMX4320)
Revell stunned the hobby world when they announced the imminent release of this new-tool Ford Bronco. Never before made in plastic, the Bronco flew right off the shelf. Its 137 parts make for a kit that a modeler of any level can build!
1/25 1930 Ford Model A Coupe Hot Rod (Revell-Monogram RMX4326)
One of the more popular kits of 2016, this kit hit an untimely snafu when the tooling was dropped and damaged in the factory. Out of stock right now, it is expected back in the next six to eight months, where it should again rise to the top of the model car charts. With 151 parts, this kit is a fun, unique build that should be proudly displayed on your shelf!
1/25 1965 Plymouth Belvedere Car (Moebius, MOE1218)
Despite not selling quite as much as its Model King counterpart, Moebius’ 1/25 scale version of the 1965 Plymouth Belvedere was still among the top kits of 2016. It features a full detailed interior and engine, chrome-plated parts and waterslide decals. Similar to the Melrose Missile, it is a fun build that brings you back decades ago.
1/25 1969 Plymouth Barracuda (MPC832)
MPC also laid their claim to the “Top Model Cars” list for 2016, with their 1/25 scale 1969 Plymouth Barracuda. This old kit was re-popped with a much-needed facelift, along with vintage-style custom mags. With multiple options of how to build some of the finer details, this kit got some of the best reviews of any car on this list.
1/25 1967 Chevrolet Impala SS (AMT981)
AMT was having a good day when they released this kit. An updated version of their original Impala, the tooling was modernized and adjusted for accuracy, making this version of the Impala one of the top model car kits of 2016. This vintage mega muscle car features everything a car modeler would want, with over 100 parts, including a V-8 power plan and a highly-detailed interior. Plus, the vintage-styled packaging is the cherry on top!
