How to Use Resin Detailing Parts on Plastic Model Kits
Posted by MegaHobby.com on Nov 29th 2024
Resin parts are a fantastic addition to model kits for various reasons. For instance, kit manufacturers might occasionally miss the mark on accuracy or sizing. In my case, while working on my Heinkel He111, we noticed the ammunition magazines in the kit didn't quite match the actual size. A resin armament set by Aires provided larger and more accurate versions, allowing us to enhance the kit's fidelity.
Resin parts also offer ease of assembly. Comparing the exhaust stubs in the Heinkel kit—two pieces requiring glue and seam cleanup—to single-piece, clean resin parts, the latter significantly reduces assembly complexity.
Moreover, resin parts often provide additional details absent from the original kit. For instance, the armament set we used included radio gear. Adding these intricate details, especially in visible areas like the radio room, enhances the overall realism of the model.
However, working with resin parts requires specific tools and adhesives. Unlike plastic parts that respond well to plastic cement, resin parts demand cyanoacrylic glue (CA glue) for attachment. These parts don't have seam lines but need excess material removal, which involves careful cutting and sanding.
Resin parts produce fine dust when cut or sanded, posing health risks. Wearing a mask and gloves while working with resin is advisable, preventing inhalation or accidental ingestion of dust particles. We suggest working in a well-ventilated space or near your paint booth to mitigate airborne dust.
When comparing the assembled resin parts with their original kit counterparts, the difference is remarkable. After assembling a machine gun using resin and photo-etched parts, the aftermarket piece visibly surpasses the original kit part in detail and accuracy.
Delving into the world of photo-etch and resin detailing parts amplifies the quality and authenticity of model kits. With a bit of research, experimentation, and the right tools, these parts elevate models to a whole new level, setting them apart and enhancing their visual appeal.
