Description
As the muscle car craze took off in the late 1960s, there appeared to be a ready market that could be met by offering more inexpensive models. Plymouth responded with the 1968 Road Runner which had all of the muscle, but none of the fancy extras found on relatively expensive performance cars. The lack of frills helped keep the Road Runner's price low, which was exactly what many buyers were looking for. The restyled 1970 Road Runner was part of Plymouth's new "Rapid Transit System" family of high-performance cars. Whimsical new features included optional "dust trail" side stripes and a wild collection of attention grabbing "High Impact" paint colors. The optional 440+6 engine ran a trio of 2-barrel carbs and punched out 390 horsepower and a whopping 490 lb-ft of torque. So equipped, a Road Runner could cut the quarter mile in the mid-13 second range at over 102 mph.
