Description
With the TRAM system equipped, the A-6E could locate targets with a turret-mounted FLIR camera and laser designator plus a brand new radar system. In the deadly cat and mouse game that SAM hunting entails, this was the ultimate checkmate move. Radar could locate your target, the laser marks it, the FLIR keeps it on track, and the missiles do the rest. With a target laser-designated, weapons officers could switch off the radar, killing SAM battery's links back to the aircraft.
