Description

The B-24J Liberator was a four-engined USAAF bomber produced when the Army contracted Consolidated Aircraft Corp. to design a successor to the B-17. The B-17’s Achilles heel was its limited cruising range, so designers gave precedence to this in their plans for the B-24. It was thus fitted with aerodynamically efficient Davis high aspect ratio main wings that could be heavily loaded with fuel tanks. The B-24’s large and deep fuselage was intended to accommodate an unprecedentedly large bombload but was also appreciated for the versatility it lended to the aircraft and its mission types. The prototype first flew in December 1939. The B-24 was America’s most heavily produced aircraft, with over 18,000 units rolling off factory lines. It has seen action in more combat zones than any other bomber. Its service was particularly notable in the Pacific Theater, where it was the US mainstay heavy bomber until the B-29 came to be. The B-24J was first produced in August 1943 and featured an R-1830-65 engine with turbo supercharge, the C-1 autopilot system and the M-9 bomb aiming machine.
