Description
The Universal Carrier Mk.I was built from 1940 to 1942, when it was replaced by the Mk.II version. This had a similar hull but several detail changes were made as a result of combat experience. The most important was the Stacy Towing Hitch, which allowed the Mk.II to tow the 6-pounder anti-tank gun or small trailers. Welding was introduced to help waterproof the hull and the headlights were replaced by a smaller light mounted on the front hull. Stowage positions were revised to give more room in the rear compartments and steps were added to the hull sides for easier access. The Universal Carrier Mk.II first saw action in North Africa in 1942 and went on to serve on all fronts by the end of the war.
