Description
With the help of the Soviets in the middle of the 1950’s, a tank production plant was constructed near Beijing, with another sometime later in the industrial region of Shanxi. Tank production began in 1957 and Type 59 was the designation of this AFV in PRC service. The Type 69 was an upgrade made directly from the Type 59. Later improvements to the Type 59 included the installation of a laser rangefinder above the main gun, and rubber side skirts.
