Description
The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet was developed as a successor to the F/A-18 Hornet. The fuselage was lengthened for a larger interior fuel tank and onboard fuel storage capacity was extended even to the vertical stabilizer. These changes necessitated a more powerful engine and a larger rectangular air intake. The wings were lengthened and their surface area enlarged to increase lift. Outside of these changes and some minor electrical and avionic system tweaks, features of the Super Hornet were kept as interchangeable as possible with the original F/A-18C/D. The EA-18G Growler is an electronic warfare version of the F/A-18F Hornet fighter and a successor to the EA-6B Prowler. It first flew in August 2006, proceeded to crew training with squadron VAQ-129 in September 2007 and went into regular service from there. It is fitted with the same electronic jamming, defensive, and accident prevention gar used in the EA-6B. The aircraft can deploy the AGM-88 E AARGM anti-radar missile as well as the AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air in underwing ordnance positions.
