Assembly Required Skill Level 2. Ages 10 and up.1:6 scale. On Jan 31st, 1958 the US Army launched Explorer I, the first successful US Earth satellite. It roared skyward from Cape Canaveral on an Army Jupiter C rocket. The Explorer I carried high and low powered tranmitters. A looping orbit allowed some of these instruments to first measure the bands of intense radiation surroundiing the Earth now known as the Van Allen Radiation Belts. Explorer I remained in orbit for 12 years after making 58,408 circuits of the Earth. Kit includes rotating base, full interior and Scale-Master decals. Another great space kit from Glencoe Models.
