Description
The F9F-2 Panther, the first jet fighter produced by Grumman, was also the first USN carrier-borne jet fighter to participate in combat. During the Korean conflict, the Panther units deployed to carriers there were utilized as the main source of air support to US combat troops fighting the Communist forces on the Korean Peninsula, the first time US Naval carrier-borne jet fighters took part in a combat action. A different version of the Panther, the F9F-2P, was used as a photographic reconnaissance aircraft and an upgraded version, the F9F-5, was also made, which mounted the J48-P-4 engine.
