Description
The Fw 190 ranks among the best fighters of WWII. It was developed as a successor to the Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter and the general (and incorrect) consensus at the time of its creation was that it would never be quite as effective as the Bf 109. The D series encompassed seven model types from the D-9 to D-15, with the D-9 being the most heavily produced. The distinctive long cowling that gave it the nickname ‘Long-nosed Dora’ also necessitated a compensating extension of the rear fuselage as well as an enlargement of the vertical stabilizer. Another distinctive feature of the D Fw 190s was the Galland Haube semi-blown canopy. The Papagei-Staffel (Parrot Squadron) was part of Adolf Galland’s elite JV44, using Fw 190D-9s to provide top airfield air cover for the unit’s Me 262s, which were vulnerable during take-off and landing. The distinctive red and white stripe paint scheme of this unit’s D-9s was used to prevent friendly anti-aircraft fire when operating over their own airbases.
Please see the paint guide below for the manufacturer’s suggested colors.
