Description
The series of ‘Ten-Go’ operations comprised a joint Army-Navy kamikaze campaign conducted as part of the overall defense of Okinawa against Allied forces in the spring of 1945. Each Ten-Go operation was given a code number according to the area in which it took place. Ten-Go #1 was carried out in waters around Okinawa, #2 near Taiwan, #3 along the East China Sea coast, etc. Ten-Go #1 was centered around the final sortie of the superbattleship Yamato, which was escorted by the light cruisers Yahagi and Yukikaze and eight destroyers. The original plan was for this force to blow through the Allied naval picket lines around Okinawa, then the Yamato would beach itself and fight as a fixed gun emplacement while the crew disembarked and joined the Imperial Army and Marines to fight as infantrymen. However, the Yamato – along with a large portion of its escort force – was sunk on the way by American naval aircraft. The cruiser Yukikaze and three escorting destroyers just conducted survivor rescue operations in the aftermath before making for home port.
