Description
The Atago class of guided missile destroyers (DDG) are the largest JMSDF warships equipped with the Aegis Combat System (an integrated naval combat system emphasizing air defense.) They were built as next-generation successors to the Kongo class of DDGs. The Atago class warships are based on the earlier Kongo design, featuring a flat-surfaced tower-type mast in place of the Kongo’s lattice mast, and also a sharply-edged superstructure with heightened stealth properties. The Atago has command and control capabilities that allow it to perform a flagship role for naval formations up to convoy level. Four AN/SPY-1D phased array radars arranged around Atago’s bridge are the heart of the Aegis system; they have a tracking and acquisition performance superior to the Kongo class, providing full 360 degree and overhead detection coverage out to a range of 500km. It is said that the system can track some 200 targets and engage 12 or more simultaneously. The Aegis system on the Atago destroyers can reportedly intercept targets up to 200km out, bringing to bear an awesome air defense arsenal consisting of SM-2MR VLS (vertical launching system) anti-air missiles, Mk.45 Mod.4 five inch guns, and a Phalanx (CIWS) 20mm cannon with a firing rate of some 4500 rounds/minute. The Atago is also the first JMSDF guided missile destroyer to be equipped with a helicopter hangar, in this case capable of carrying one SH-60J/K patrol helicopter.
