Description
The most numerous and famous French armored vehicle was the AMD-35 designed by Panhard as a reconnaissance vehicle for cavalry. Serial production was launched in 1934. The vehicle was named Panhard 178 and featured a rear engine and all-wheel drive. The main armament was a 25mm anti-tank gun. There were 550 produced up until 1940. As part of the French Army cavalry units, Panhard 178 took part in combat in the spring of 1940. More than 200 vehicles were captured by the German Army and used in the Wehrmacht and the Waffen SS under the designation Pz.Spah.204(f). 43 vehicles were converted to railcars for BP 42 armored trains.
