Description
The USS Enterprise, known colloquially as "Big E", was the second of the Yorktown Class aircraft carriers. Constructed in 1934, it was launched in 1936 and entered service in 1938. The Enterprise narrowly escaped the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, but was immediately tasked with combat duty against the new enemy. She provided cover for the Doolittle Raid on mainland Japan and took part in many famous battles, including the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Philippines, and more.
After the war, she took part in "Operation Magic Carpet" and brought U.S. troops home. The Enterprise was decommissioned in 1947 and dismantled in 1958.
