Description
The two deep submergence rescue vehicles (DSRVs) of the Mystic class were developed after the tragic loss of the USS Thresher. They were designed so that they could be taken to any place in the world with a Lockheed C-5 Galaxy within 24 hours in order to be taken from there to a disaster site on the back of a submarine or on board a suitable ship. Twenty-four people could be taken to safety on the way. The stacking of DSRV-1 took place in 1970. After an extensive test, she was ultimately integrated into the US Navy in 1977 and was named Mystic. It was still in operation in 2008. Their sister boat, Avalon (DSRV-2), was launched in 1971 and was decommissioned in 2000.
