Description

Iwo Jima is a United States Navy large-deck amphibious assault ship (LHD). Built by the Ingalls Shipyard in 2001, it is the seventh ship of the Wasp class amphibious assault ships. Iwo Jima has a displacement of 40,500 tons and houses a 3200-member crew. The ship will join the U.S. Atlantic Fleet as the main U.S. Navy and Marine Corps amphibious readiness force. The assault ship can handle carrying, transportation, deployment and command support for the Marine Corps Expeditionary Force. The ship can provide a full amphibious assault/transport advance force and special operations functions.
