Description
The Lexington (CV-2) was originally designated CC-1 and laid down as a battle cruiser in January 1921 in Quincy, Massachusetts. Authorized to be completed as an aircraft carrier by July 1922, it was commissioned in December 1927. On December 7, 1941, Lexington was based at Pearl Harbor when word of the Japanese attack was received. She immediately launched a search plane to hunt for the Japanese fleet. On May 7, 1942 Lexington’s air group sank the Japanese light carrier SHOHO and on the 8th Lexington was hit by two torpedoes and three bombs, finally rolling over on her side and sinking. Lexington received two battle stars for her World War II service.
