Description
The Mk.I tanks were evenly divided into two sexes depending on the armament. The male was armed with two 6-pounder guns and three 8mm Hotchkiss machine guns. They first entered service in 1916 and saw action a month later as part of the Somme offensive. Many tanks broke down or got bogged down, and most were captured by the Germans. After a few brief interim variants of Mk.II and Mk.III, the Mk.I was ultimately succeeded by the very similar Mk.IV in 1917.
