Description
The last and most perfect of NN Polikarpov’s biplane fighters was the I-153. It had gull-shaped upper wings, a retractable chassis and four ShKAS machine guns. The serial planes had M-62 radial engines and the later series featured the more powerful M-63. Its maiden flight was in August 1938. In total 3437 planes were made from 1939-1941. In the summer of 1941 the Chaika (‘gull’) was the basis Soviet Fighter Aviation along with I-16 fighters. I-153s were used in combat until mid-1943.
