Wood Models

Wood Model Kits, Balsa Airplanes, Gliders & Wooden Ship Models

Experience model building with one of the hobby's classic materials in MegaHobby's Wood Models department. From balsa airplanes and wooden gliders to easy-build wood kits and detailed wooden ship models, these projects offer a hands-on building experience with the natural character of wood.

Wood modeling covers a surprisingly broad range of projects. A simple glider can provide an approachable introduction to building, while a detailed wooden ship can become a substantial long-term project involving careful assembly, shaping and finishing. Builders can also find extra wood and related supplies for repairs, modifications and custom work.

Balsa Airplane Models

Explore Balsa Airplanes for aircraft projects built around lightweight wood construction. Balsa has a long history in aeromodeling and gives builders a very different experience from assembling injection-molded plastic aircraft.

Instead of simply joining preformed plastic components, wooden aircraft projects can place greater emphasis on the structure of the model itself. Depending on the particular kit, builders may work with frames, ribs, longerons or other wooden components that reveal how the shape of an aircraft is created.

Aviation enthusiasts interested in traditional plastic scale kits can also explore MegaHobby's Model Aircraft department for warbirds, jets, helicopters, airliners and other scale airplane subjects.

Classic Wooden Gliders

Discover the simple appeal of flight with Classic Wooden Gliders. Wooden gliders can provide an approachable introduction to aircraft building while keeping the project focused on basic construction and the enjoyment of flight.

For younger builders or anyone new to hands-on hobbies, a straightforward glider project can demonstrate how a few lightweight components come together to create a recognizable aircraft form.

Easy Wooden Model Kits

New to wood modeling? Browse Easy Wooden Kits for projects intended to provide a more approachable building experience.

Easy wood kits can help introduce basic skills such as identifying parts, following assembly steps, fitting components and working carefully with a natural material. They can also make enjoyable projects for experienced hobbyists looking for something different from a more complex scale model.

Builders looking for other beginner-friendly projects can explore Snap Together Kits, Model Kit Starter Sets and Educational Models.

Wooden Ship Model Kits

Take on a traditional maritime modeling project with Wood Ship Models. Wooden ship building offers a distinctive alternative to plastic ship kits and can place much of the modeling experience around constructing and finishing the vessel from wooden components.

Depending on the project, wooden ship models can involve hull construction, deck details, masts, spars, rigging and other elements associated with historic vessels. Larger and more detailed projects can reward patience with an impressive finished model that reflects many stages of careful craftsmanship.

Builders interested in additional maritime subjects can visit the broader Model Ships department for plastic and resin warships, submarines, aircraft carriers, sailing ships, ocean liners and civilian vessels.

Wooden Ship Decals

Add markings and finishing details with products from our Wooden Ship Decals collection. Decals can provide another layer of visual detail as a wooden ship project approaches completion.

For additional products used when working with markings, browse Decal Supplies in our Tools & Supplies department.

Extra Wood for Model Building

Sometimes a project calls for additional material beyond the pieces originally supplied. Browse Extra Wood for additional wooden material useful for appropriate modeling projects, repairs, modifications and custom fabrication.

Builders who enjoy creating components from raw material can also explore Scratch Building for styrene, brass, aluminum, tubing, structural shapes, siding, roofing and other fabrication materials.

Tools & Supplies for Wood Modeling

Working with wood can involve cutting, shaping, sanding, fitting and gluing parts throughout the project. Visit Tools & Supplies for equipment used during construction and finishing.

Explore Cutting Tools, Knives and Blades and Saws for shaping components. Browse Filing & Sanding products for refining edges and surfaces, and visit Glues and Adhesives for assembly products appropriate to your project.

Accurate measurement is especially useful when fitting or fabricating wooden parts. Cutting Mats and Rulers can provide a practical foundation for measuring and cutting work at the bench.

Paint & Finish Wooden Models

A wood model can be finished in many different ways depending on the subject and desired appearance. Some projects highlight the natural appearance of wood, while others use painted finishes to reproduce the full-size subject.

Visit the MegaHobby Paint Store for paints, primers and finishing products used across the modeling hobby. Always select finishing products appropriate for the material and follow the manufacturer's instructions for the particular project.

Build Something Different

Wood modeling offers a tactile building experience that differs from conventional plastic kits. The material can be cut, shaped and sanded as the project develops, giving builders a direct role in creating the final form of the model.

Whether you're assembling a simple wooden glider, building a balsa aircraft, introducing a new hobbyist to an easy wooden kit or committing to a detailed wooden ship project, MegaHobby's Wood Models department brings together kits, materials and related supplies for builders who enjoy creating models from wood.
