Build Around the Cross Section

Choose the cross section before the overall size. A channel is not a direct substitute for an angle or an I beam, even when one outside dimension is similar. Plan the joints, orientation and visible edges of the structure, and check the exact product dimensions before ordering several lengths for one assembly.

Measure Before Cutting

Compare the listed dimensions with the part or drawing you are working from. Select a cutting or forming tool appropriate to the metal and size, and plan how the stock will be held while you work. Check the cut ends and any required cleanup before test-fitting the part to the model.
